Medumo and Brigham & Women’s Hospital Team Up to Improve Colonoscopy Preparation
Updated: May 21, 2019
Medumo, a Boston-based digital health startup, is teaming up with Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Gastroenterology Department to improve colonoscopy preparation and outcome.
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and it is expected to cause 49,190 deaths in 2016 (cancer.org). Colonoscopy is the gold standard screening test for early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer.
Research has shown that 12% of patients scheduled for colonoscopy don’t show up to their appointment or fail their pre-procedure preparation entirely, wasting valuable procedural slots and driving up avoidable costs (Med Decis Making 2013). Of the patients who do show up, 25% arrive inadequately prepared which Increases procedure time and reduces adenoma detection rate (Am J Med 2016). Every lost colonoscopy procedure results in a net loss of approximately $1,000 to gastroenterology practices.
Medumo, a startup founded by a group of Harvard physicians and EdTech entrepreneurs, is tackling this problem head-on. Supported by the Brigham Care Redesign Incubator and Startup Program (BCRISP), Medumo has partnered with Brigham and Women’s Hospital to deploy a digital care guide for patients. The mobile and web-based software system sends patients timely instructions, reminders, and check-ins to keep them informed and on track throughout the procedure preparation process. “We are honored to be collaborating with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a world class institution, to help improve the patient experience and prevent colorectal cancer," says Adeel Yang, M.D. Co-founder & President of Medumo.
